Anti-ICE protestors plan to march from high school to Ashland Plaza; Saturday night vigil in Medford for U.S. citizen shot by ICE agent; Tuesday ‘lie-in’ protest at Medford ICE office

Ashland.news staff report

Protesters will march from Ashland High School to Ashland Plaza at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 11, days after an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer shot and killed an unarmed U.S. citizen in Minneapolis, Minnesota, according to an online post by Oregon District 2 Indivisible.

The shooting of 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good on Wednesday, Jan. 7, fueled demonstrations across the country, including in Portland and Eugene. The day after, hundreds of protestors marched down Minneapolis streets chanting “ICE out now,” according to the Associated Press.

Indivisible, a progressive nationwide organization, planned nearly a thousand nationwide “ICE Out For Good” vigils and protests for a weekend of action on Jan. 10 and 11 — with 46 events in Oregon.

“This killing is part of a broader pattern of unchecked violence, impunity and abuse carried out by federal immigration enforcement agencies against members of our communities,” the event information on Mobilize reads.

The events were also planned in response to the shooting of a Hispanic couple in Portland on Thursday by a U.S. Customs and Border Protection agent, according to the Oregon District 2 (ORD2) Indivisible event calendar.

Sunday’s rally follows Senator Jeff Merkley’s town hall, which is scheduled for 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at Ashland High School gymnasium. The protest event information says people who want to march should meet outside the Ashland High School gymnasium or at Triangle Park on Siskiyou Boulevard at 2 p.m. Participants can also meet at the Plaza at 2:15 p.m on Sunday.

Besides Ashland’s Sunday rally from 2 to 4 p.m., a candlelight vigil is planned in Medford from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 10, at Veteran’s Park. A “die-in,” or “lie-in,” protest — a form of protest that has participants simulate being dead — is set for 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 13, in front of the Medford ICE building. “We will chalk around people’s prone bodies on the sidewalks in memory of those who have died by ICE actions or in ICE custody,” the ORD2 Indivisible event calendar reads.

With a commitment to nonviolent, peaceful rallies, the event information on Mobilize also says the coordinated demonstrations are “to demand accountability, honor the life lost and make visible the human cost of ICE’s actions.”
