Michael Black taking post with another, unspecified city, announcement says, effective July 14

Ashland Parks & Recreation Commission Director Michael Black has resigned in order to take a new job as a director in a different city, the city of Ashland and the APRC jointly announced Thursday, June 1. The other city was not named.

“After almost nine years with APRC, it is time for me to pass the torch to open new perspectives and growth, for both myself and the organization,” Black said in a statement released with the announcement.

“Director Black has implemented outstanding projects during his tenure with APRC,” APRC Commissioner Leslie Eldridge said in a statement. “He rebuilt Garfield Park and added the beloved splash pad, a community favorite during the summer months. He expanded recreational opportunities that include open space access through the acquisition of land. He also served as project manager of the authentic Japanese Garden in Lithia Park … These are just a few examples of his labor.”

“The council, the Parks & Recreation Commission and the community appreciate and acknowledge Director Black’s commitment to the City of Ashland. We are grateful for his service. His expertise will be missed,” Mayor Tonya Graham said in a statement. 

Black started in his current post in August 2014. According to the department’s 2022-23 salary schedule, Black could earn up to $156,000 annually. His resignation is effective July 14.

Prior to coming to Ashland, Black served as community development director in Grants Pass for five years.
