Banding together: Alexander Gonzalez, RVSB’s new conductor

Meet new Rogue Valley Symphonic Band Artistic Director Alexander George Gonzalez. He also is director of bands at Southern Oregon University where he conducts the SOU Wind Ensemble and SOU Jazz Band. He plays the euphonium, trumpet, and classical guitar. He also is a master of cutlery percussion. But his favorite instrument is a stick he waves through the air.

Ashland’s 150th birthday — 1874 to 2024

Ashland’s 150th birthday dates from its incorporation as the City of Ashland on Oct. 13, 1874. The Oregon legislature passed a bill that was signed on that day by Governor La Fayette Grover.  Ashland celebrates its 150th birthday party from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Oct 20, at Butler Bandshell in Lithia Park.

CERT emergency volunteer training session starts Friday evening

Ashland residents have an upcoming training opportunity to learn how to help rather than hinder during a disaster. Training begins from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m Friday, Oct. 18, picking up again from 8 a.m to 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, with a one-hour lunch break. Training concludes the following weekend with a session from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 25, and a final session from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26.

Photojournalism tips from a professional

Bob Palermini, professional photographer, will give a presentation about photojournalism at the Southern Oregon Photographic Association meeting on October 15 in Medford. He studied photojournalism in college and has been a photographer for Ashland.news since shortly after it debuted in January 2022.

Ashland City Council candidate forum coming up Sunday

Six candidates for three contested Ashland City Council seats are expected to share views Sunday afternoon in a forum cosponsored by the League of Women Voters, American Association of University Women (AAUW) Ashland Branch, and Ashland.news. Representatives of AAUW and Ashland.news will lead questioning of Teresa Cisneros and Douglas Knauer, candidates for Position 1 on the City Council; Jeff Dahle and Kelly Marcotulli, Position 2; and Dylan Bloom and Eric Navickas, Position 3, from 2 to 4 p.m.
