A locally made short film entitled “I AM FINE” that centers on the experience of a gay man named Ryan as he grapples with his religion and sexual identity will make its premiere on Dec. 6 at John Pugh’s Big Dog Studio in Ashland.
After a 17-year hiatus and amid a strain on the nation’s blood supply, the Red Cross is returning to the Southern Oregon University campus in Ashland this week for a two-day blood drive. The Red Cross will host its first blood drive since 2007 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday in the first floor Associated Students of Southern Oregon University (ASSOU) Lounge inside Stevenson Union.
The Bear Creek Salmon Festival is returning with plenty to learn, see and experience at Ashland’s North Mountain Park Nature Center on Saturday, Oct. 12. Now in its 17th year, the festival celebrates the seasonal cycle of Pacific northwest salmon species, environmental stewardship and community.
An exuberant crowd of an estimated 1,000 people lined Ashland’s Main Street Saturday morning, cheering and applauding the 14th annual Southern Oregon Pride Parade. The 53rd annual Talent Harvest Festival was held Saturday downtown under perfectly sunny autumn skies. Thousands turned out for the event, which kicked off with the Talent Harvest Festival 5K, 10K and Fun runs, and included a morning pet parade. The Ashland Independent Film Festival kicks off its four-day run Thursday, Oct. 3, with the centerpiece film for the festival, ‘Including Us,’ set for its world premiere Saturday. The film, made by local director Brandon Givens, is about the Oregon Shakespeare Festival’s production of “Hairspray: A Broadway Musical” in 2019. The story focuses on four actors with disabilities who starred in the musical, along with the rest of the cast.
AIFF held a preview night for the upcoming film fest on Sept. 18. The arts, environment, and social activism are three of the main movie themes making up the list for AIFF 2024, coming up Oct. 3-6. The 2024 lineup includes more than 60 movie premieres, many with in-depth Q&A discussions with filmmakers, guest artists and actors in attendance.
Talent Maker City will hold its grand reopening 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 21, at its new makerspace building at 109 Talent Ave. An official ribbon cutting and speeches begin at 11 a.m., followed by hands-on activities for all ages.
Ashland’s popular ice rink will get a new chiller and a new canopy next season to replace aging equipment that is in danger of failing. Repairs for the Ashland Rotary Centennial Ice Rink at 95 Winburn Way, across the street from Lithia Park, are estimated to cost about $300,000.
Mt. Ashland Ski Area’s first new chairlift in more than three decades will open this weekend. The Lithia Chair will open at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 14, giving skiers and snowboarders greater access to easy and intermediate slopes, according to a release issued Tuesday from the nonprofit ski area.
