Estimated 6,000 Jackson County residents now eligible for free health insurance

An estimated 6,000 additional Jackson County residents are eligible for Oregon’s free health insurance program, Oregon Health Plan, following the July 1 launch of “OHP Bridge.” OHP Bridge will provide free health insurance (medical, dental and mental health) and transportation support to appointments for those earning between 138 to 200% of the federal poverty level (FPL).

‘Telling the American narrative’: SOU to conduct archaeological investigations of historic eastern Oregon logging town this fall

With a newly funded $20,000 grant from the Oregon State Historic Preservation Office, some Southern Oregon University’s Sociology and Anthropology Program students and staff will travel to eastern Oregon this fall to perform archaeological excavations for a logging ghost town that once was home to a diverse community in the early 20th century, including African-American and white loggers.

The book “The Place We Make: Breaking the Legacy of Legalized Hate” will serve as a jumping-off point to discuss the importance of understanding Oregon’s history of racism and how that knowledge can be applied to address racial injustices that the state still faces. Monday’s free talk, the third in a series presented by Ashland Sunrise Project, is entitled “Uncovering Difficult Truths.”

Obituary: Amanda Louise (Butler) Pyle, 80, a longtime Rogue Valley resident and elementary school teacher, passed away Sept. 3 at Celia’s Hospice House in Medford. Teaching was not a “job” for Amanda — it was a passion. She is especially remembered for involving students in creative projects and also for giving every one of them a hug as they left her classroom at the end of each school day.

Relocations: ‘Welcome to hell’ 

Herbert Rothschild: Detainees are handcuffed for days, often leading to amputations. Surgeries are performed without anesthesia. Prisoners are held in painful positions and blindfolded for long periods. They are malnourished. Punishments include beatings that have led to broken bones and teeth. There is evidence of rape.
