Officials say U.S. Forest Service is conducting the burns under favorable winter conditions

Ashland.news staff report

Controlled burning is underway today, the city of Ashland announced Thursday, and residents in Lithia Park and surrounding neighborhoods may notice smoke if cold air settles into Ashland late Thursday.

The prescribed burns are being conducted by the U.S. Forest Service, Rogue River–Siskiyou National Forest, in the Ashland watershed. Snow cover above the city and expected winds should push most of the smoke away from town, according to a news release on the Ashland city webpage.

City officials note that smoke could potentially affect popular trails, including Horn Gap, No Candies, Potlicker, and the 2060 road above Granite Street.

People are advised to avoid outdoor activities and take other precautions, such as shutting windows, if they smell smoke. More information can be found at smokewiseashland.org.
