Abacela Winery CEO to speak about climate and wine at SOU

Abacela Winery CEO Dr. Greg Jones will speak about climate’s influence on sustainable wine production at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 13, at Southern Oregon University’s Hannon Library, 1250 Siskiyou Blvd., in the Meese Room, according to a news release.

The talk, part of Friends of the Hannon Library Speaker Series, is free and open to the public. A Zoom link will also be available at https://hanlib.sou.edu/friends/lectureseries2022-23.html for those who cannot attend in person.

Jones will present an overview on how the natural environment influences quality and production characteristics of wine grapes. He will also touch on the suitability of different wine grapes in different climates and how climate variability and climate change impact the industry. An atmospheric scientist and wine climatologist, he has taught and conducted research at the University of Virginia, Linfield University, and SOU. Abacela Winery is located in Roseburg.

“Dr. Jones’s work was also one of the first to tie climate change to fundamental biological phenomena in vines and the resulting influences on productivity and quality,” the release said. “His groundbreaking work has informed and influenced the wine industry across the globe.”

Metered parking is available for attendees in parking lots 1, 12, 29, 36, 37 and 41, the release said.

Those who need disability accommodations to participate in the event may contact SOU’s Disability Resources office at 541-552-6213. Email libraryevents@sou.edu or call 541-552-6816.
