On June 17, 2015, Dylan Roof studied scripture with a room full of faithful members of Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina. At the end of the Bible Study as they bowed their heads in prayer, Dylan began shooting at them, murdering nine people. Dylan was baptized in the ELCA. As part of the 2019 ELCA Churchwide Assembly, voting members adopted a resolution designating June 17 as a commemoration of the martyrdom of the Emanuel 9.
