Friends of the Hannon Library present: Challenges For Today’s Libraries

The Friends of the Hannon library will host a panel discussion entitled “Challenges for Today’s Libraries” from 5:30 to  6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 3, at Southern Oregon University’s Hannon Library, room 206.

The discussion will address current issues affecting librarians and library patrons alike, in both public and academic libraries. Nationally and locally, libraries face daunting issues. A host of challenges — rising costs, funding cuts, outdated facilities, social problems, and the politicization of access to library materials — weigh on their future.

Panelists include Wendy Cornelisen, State Librarian of Oregon, Kari Mary, Jackson County Library Services, and Jennifer Cox, Dean of Library and Learning Resources at Chemeketa Community College. Carrie Forbes, Dean of the School of Undergraduate Studies and the University Library at SOU, will moderate the panel.

The event is free and open to the public. A Zoom link will also be available on the Friends website, https://hanlib.sou.edu/friends/lectureseries.html.

Women’s basketball: SOU wins handily in first round of national tournament

For the fourth year in a row, the Southern Oregon women’s basketball team is through to the second round of the NAIA National Tournament. In Friday night’s 86-52 first-round win over UC Merced at Lithia Motors Pavilion, the Raiders made it look routine. The task gets taller, literally and figuratively, in Saturday’s 5 p.m. second-round matchup against No. 7 seed Wayland Baptist (Texas).
