Martin Ellis, a Portland-based music composer, designer of new organs and concert artist, will play the Schoenstein organ at First Presbyterian Church in Medford at 4 p.m. Sunday, November 23. Ellis plans to present a varied program – from a J.S Bach prelude written in the early 18th century to pieces written in 2024.
There is no admission charge. A free-will offering will be taken.
Ellis grew up in Indiana, played the Indianapolis Paramount Theater organ as a teenager and went on to be an organ soloist with symphony orchestras. He relocated to Portland in 2012. His compositions are marketed through the Lorenz Publishing Company, and can be heard on YouTube.
The Medford Schoenstein organ was installed in 1992. Schoenstein & Co. began in San Francisco in 1877. It’s current plant is in Benicia. They are the largest pipe organ builder on the West Coast. Among their instruments is the huge organ in the conference center of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Salt Lake City.
