Poetry Reading with Laura Winter and Jennifer Rood

Jennifer Rood‘s poetry explores the wonders that exist all around us—in people, in nature, in the everyday—​and invites you to enjoy, along with her, some of the many treasures she has found.

She will be reading poems from her book Present and Speaking Everywhere: A Collection of Found Poetry/Art (Not a Pipe Publishing, 2024), and also from the body of work she produced as the Oregon Caves National Monument’s Artist-in-Residence in Fall 2023.

Laura Winter will be reading from her most recent book and collaboration, “noble scratch, roughly spoken,” released by as if press. This new book is a collection of 25 poems by Laura Winter and 25 drawings by Brad Winter. The drawings have been selected from Brad’s ROUGH BOOK series of visual art. It is the first time the two Winter artists have been published together in a book. The poems in “noble scratch, roughly” spoken range thematically with meditations, songs, jazz-inspired interludes and musings about climate change and its impacts on what it means to alive. There will be a discussion on the origins of the book and collaboration.

Lucky fire break: Second fire on day of Almeda Fire was extinguished by Greensprings crew

A wind-driven grass fire ignited near Almeda Drive on Sept. 8, 2020, ravaged its way northwest through the wildland urban interface, destroying thousands of structures through Talent and Phoenix. The direction of the wind that day is often credited with preserving Ashland from the fire. But there was also a quick intervention from the south, when firefighters with the Greensprings Rural Fire District extinguished a vehicle fire intentionally set on fire at Emigrant Lake.

Unveiled: Mural depicting Ashland’s past and present

The unveiling of the final version of a major mural project in downtown Ashland was a big night for the local art scene. More than one hundred people crowded into the warehouse-sized studio of muralist John Pugh on Helman Street on Friday night to see Pugh’s vision for a mural that will adorn the Ashland Elks Lodge at 255 E. Main Street.
