RVML Tuesday Night Lecture Series : Vedic Chanting and Brain Health with Peggy Leviton

What does Vedic chanting have to do with brain health? Quite a lot, as it turns out!

Vedic Sanskrit chanting is increasingly recognized for its positive impact on the brain. Research reveals that engaging in this ancient practice offers a wide range of benefits—physical, mental, and spiritual.

The Vedas are ancient pre-Hindu texts/scriptures that serve as the foundation for Sanskrit chanting. Ancient seers (Rishis) heard and saw visions which informed this oral transmission. By exploring the Vedas and their traditional methods, we can better understand the connection between these practices and modern neurological research. And for Westerners, no prior knowledge of Sanskrit is necessary!

Contemporary research suggests that cognitive decline can be significantly delayed, or even potentially avoided, through two key processes: learning a foreign language and musical learning. Activating these areas of the brain increases neuroplasticity. Vedic chanting, which includes and combines elements of both language and music, is uniquely positioned to stimulate these areas of the brain. Coordinating our processes of listening to and producing unique sounds, learning and visually recognizing patterns, and applying the chanting “rules” – together these engage and stimulate different neurological functions.

The practice of Vedic chanting supports balanced mental function and emotional equanimity. Practitioners regularly report experiencing improved cognitive health, greater emotional regulation, improved sleep quality, clarity of thought, discernment, calmness, contentment, equanimity, focus, enhanced mood. We will explore how modern research correlates and aligns beautifully with the legacy of the ancient Rishis’ visions and chants for living a happy, balanced life!

Peggy Leviton, owner of Pegasus Sound Therapy, practices and teaches a traditional oral Vedic lineage that dates back thousands of years. Peggy’s former career background (BM, BS, MM, and former CPA) ranges from Piano teaching to Finance Director to Sound Therapist. A yoga practitioner for decades, Peggy’s curiosity about Sanskrit chanting eclipses her ability to pursue more rigorous physical yoga practices as life goes on.
