ScienceWorks January STEAM Social: Dynamic Dissections & The Science of Color

Kick off the new year with ScienceWorks’s STEAM Social, a fun-filled evening of hands-on science, creativity, and community!

Perfect for all ages, this monthly event invites families, friends, and curious minds to explore the world of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) in an engaging, multigenerational setting.

This month’s featured workshop, “Dynamic Dissections: Owl Pellet and Squid Surprises,” offers a unique chance to delve into the wonders of animal anatomy. Dissect an owl pellet to uncover its secrets or explore the fascinating anatomy of squid. These hands-on activities are designed to spark curiosity and provide a memorable learning experience for participants of all ages.

At 7 PM, join renowned local artist Sarah F. Burns for a captivating slide talk on color theory. Sarah will debunk common myths and dive into the science behind color perception, from rich neutrals to vibrant rainbows. This foundational talk, infused with creativity and scientific insights, will change how you think about color. Whether you’re an art enthusiast, science lover, or curious explorer, Sarah’s presentation promises to inspire and educate.

$10 for Non-Members
Includes full access to the museum’s exhibits

For the workshop, there’s a $5 materials fee for all participants. Beverages, including wine, beer, and non-alcoholic options, as well as light snacks, will be available for purchase to enjoy during this relaxed, social evening.

Bill Thorndike Jr. remembered as community titan, treasured friend

Family, community members and longtime friends of Medford native Bill Thorndike Jr. were collectively at a loss for words over the weekend at the sudden loss of a man they say had a hand in nearly anything good to happen in Southern Oregon for much of the past half-century. Thorndike, 71, suffered a heart attack early Saturday morning, just following a Valentine’s Day spent with his wife, Angela Thorndike, at a family cabin on Whidbey Island in Washington’s Puget Sound.
