Music Service: When we gather as a community—whether we light the chalice, share our joys and sorrows, or lift our voices in song—we are reminded that each of us has a voice that matters. Not just in the literal sense of vocal cords vibrating to produce sound, but in the deeper sense: our unique way of speaking, singing, and living truth into the world. Today I want us to reflect on the connection between finding your singing voice and finding your own voice in the world—particularly in moments that call us to speak out for justice, or to stand firm in our values.
“I did not lead the songs in jail in the voice I have now. And the voice I have now I got that night. I’d never heard it before in my life. They did what they usually do, they said, Bernice, would you lead us in a song? And I did the same first song, “Over My Head I See Freedom in the Air,” but I’d never heard that voice before. I had never been that me before.” – Bernice Johnson Reagon
