Sunday Worship: Skulls, Bonfires, Butterflies, Tricks, and Treats

October 29 @ 10:30 am

Free

At this time of year, we encounter stories that encourage us to imagine freedom even in death; to acknowledge our own losses and grief, but imagine that something of those we love goes on: in memory, in story, in this world or another. You are encouraged to bring a picture of an ancestor or loved one who has died to share with the congregation.

We will explore the wisdom of these traditions to help us accept and face death rather than avoid and ignore it.

“This was a liminal moment in the calendar, a time between two worlds, between two phases of the year, when worshippers were about to cross a boundary but hadn’t yet done so. Samhain was a way of marking that ambiguous moment when you didn’t know who you were about to become, or what the future would hold. It was a celebration of limbo.” – Katherine May

Letter: Shop locally

Brent Thompson: In our hunt for presents, hopefully we don’t forget that stores in Ashland’s downtown core and parts of Ashland Street (aka Highway 66) offer crafts, books, comics, shoes, plants, baked goods, chocolate, new and used clothes, kitchen items, games, antiques, pet supplies, art supplies, collectibles, and many other things.
