The Bad Film Society returns with Crispin Glover in the most whacked-out movie ever!
The public is invited to the next Bad Film Society meeting at 6 p.m. Saturday, June 10, in The Ashland Elks’ Dungeon. Yes! We’re finally getting going again and. due to popular demand, we’ll be meeting on a Saturday.
The feature will be the extremely bizarre “Rubid & Ed” starring Crispin Glover & Howard Hesseman (…and Karen Black!) It’s kind of like a Laurel & Hardy comedy on brown acid. An eccentric, reclusive nerd is forced by his mother to make some friends before she will return his stereo to him. He is joined on a quest through the Utah desert by a nervous, failed pyramid scheme salesman to help in finding the perfect place to bury his beloved frozen dead cat. Along the way, they have run-ins with the salesman’s ex-wife and an elusive Andy Warhol critic. Four years before the film was finally released, Glover made his infamous appearance on David Letterman. To everyone’s surprise, Glover appeared wearing platform shoes and a wig and behaving erratically, nearly kicking Letterman in the face causing Letterman to walk off the set. No one at the time knew he was acting in character as Rubin. The interview is now considered the first viral video.
Prior to the feature, fascinatingly strange shorts will be shown, possibly including a Bob Hope and Olivia Newton-John Star Wars parody, Jerry Garcia raving about Abbott and Costello, a tribute to Ann Margaret, cartoons, trailers, etc.!
Members should bring a dish for the potluck dinner, which starts at 6 p.m. Some bottom feeders just come for the great food! It sure beats dumpster diving!
The entrance to the Ashland Elks Dungeon is on Will Dodge Way (the alley between East Main Street and Lithia Way and First and Second streets.) You’ll see the “Elks Dining” sign. The private Elks parking lot will be open for use. To park, enter on Second Street. A $4 donation is requested to support The Elks and all the good they do.
