Windows in Time: Mining the Archives: Recent Discoveries Among the Glass Negatives

Join Ben Truwe for an update on discoveries made during SOHS’ ongoing glass negative scanning project, which is bringing thousands of new images to light.

This project has uncovered new photos by Peter Britt, including the original negatives of his first successful trip to Crater Lake, his tour up the Klamath River in the 1870s, and his visits to the railroad construction camps in the 1880s. SOHS has also scanned a trove of portraits by Central Point photographer Robert Vinton Beall and mysterious images by unidentified photographers. This presentation will showcase the most intriguing of these scans of local people and scenes that have gone unseen for over a century.

Ben Truwe is a Research Associate of the SOU Laboratory of Anthropology, serves on the West Side Community Coalition Board of Directors, and conducts monthly historical walking tours of Medford. He is the author of the “Looking Back” Jackson County history books and creator of the Southern Oregon History, Revised website.

The monthly Windows in Time lunchtime lectures feature well-known writers and historians and bring alive the people, values, and events that shaped our southern Oregon heritage. Lectures are jointly sponsored by the Southern Oregon Historical Society (SOHS) and Jackson County Library Services. Programs are presented in Medford (first Wednesdays, in-person and online) and again in Ashland (second Wednesdays, in-person). Recordings of Medford presentations are available on the JCLS Beyond YouTube channel.

Women’s basketball: SOU wins handily in first round of national tournament

For the fourth year in a row, the Southern Oregon women’s basketball team is through to the second round of the NAIA National Tournament. In Friday night’s 86-52 first-round win over UC Merced at Lithia Motors Pavilion, the Raiders made it look routine. The task gets taller, literally and figuratively, in Saturday’s 5 p.m. second-round matchup against No. 7 seed Wayland Baptist (Texas).
