Windows in Time: Tales of the Oregon Country

Author Carole Nielson, who has published several articles for Wild West Magazine and written several history books, will speak about her book Tales of the Oregon Country, which includes 12 short stories of Oregon History. She has also written Five Bucks for a Quarter and Notorious Women of the Wild West.

Carole Nielson acquired a passionate interest in history, especially “Old West” history, from her parents, Earl and Frankie Sheppard. Although born in Oklahoma, she has lived in southern Oregon since 1947, with the exception of three years spent in France where she worked for NATO, the US Air Force and the US Army. An enthusiastic traveler, she and her husband, Dan, have toured over 40 countries. They also entertain at retirement centers and senior centers playing music and giving talks on travel and history.

The monthly Windows in Time lunchtime lectures feature well-known writers and historians and bring alive the people, values, and events that shaped our southern Oregon heritage. Lectures are jointly sponsored by the Southern Oregon Historical Society (SOHS) and Jackson County Library Services. Programs are presented in Medford (first Wednesdays, in-person and online) and again in Ashland (second Wednesdays, in-person). Recordings of Medford presentations are available on the JCLS Beyond YouTube channel.
