MADISON, S.D. – Dakota State’s Adrian Villanueva kicked a 35-yard field goal through the uprights with 12 seconds left to give his team an 11-10 win against Southern Oregon in Frontier Conference cross-divisional action Saturday afternoon at Brian Kern Family Stadium.

The Trojans (3-1 overall) blanked the Raiders (1-3) in the second half and took over at their own 34-yard line, trailing by two points, with 1:31 remaining after SOU’s missed 51-yard field goal try. Three Tray Hettick completions – the last a 20-yarder to Maddox Kihne – put them in Raider territory, and a targeting penalty put Villanueva in range.

Senior defensive end Gabe Foster registered 3 ½ tackles for losses, including two sacks, for a Raider defense that limited DSU to 262 yards of total offense and negative-17 yards on the ground. Four more Raiders were credited with a sack apiece, while Jaxon Jedrykowski made eight tackles and blocked an extra point.

Fresh Ison accounted for SOU’s lone touchdown, plowing one yard up the middle early in the second quarter. Danny Cossette’s 26-yard field goal gave the Raiders a 10-6 halftime lead that the Trojans cut into with a safety in the third quarter.

Ison rushed 15 times for 57 yards and Rieger Sayre netted 47 yards on 11 carries. SOU quarterback Dom Montiel completed 17-of-29 pass attempts for 184 yards, four of which went to Trevor Jaasko for 54.

Hettick went 21-of-32 for 262 for the Trojans, who have won three consecutive games.

The teams’ combined point total was the lowest in any SOU game since 2009.

The Raiders will be home to open Frontier West Division next Saturday, kicking off at 1 p.m. against No. 9-ranked Montana Western (3-1).
