Hazardous waste dropoff event coming this Saturday

Variety of hazardous materials accepted for free in White City

A day for Jackson County households to drop off hazardous waste for free is coming this weekend, according to a news release.

Jackson County’s Household Hazardous Waste Dropoff will be held from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, May 13, at Rogue Transfer & Recycling, 8001 Table Rock Road, White City. Recology Ashland is sponsoring the event.

A detailed list of what will and will not be accepted is available at roguedisposal.com/transfer-station/hazardous-waste. Some examples of what to bring include:

  • Cleaning supplies such as window, drain, and bathroom cleaners, or anything containing bleach or ammonia
  • Pesticides and insecticides
  • Swimming pool chemicals
  • Weed killers currently not approved for use
  • Paint remover

Some examples of what not to bring include:

  • Paint
  • 55-gallon drums
  • Medical or biological waste
  • Asbestos
  • Propane tanks

Businesses can participate in a similar event on Friday, May 12. Business participation is not free, and an application is required. Such applications are available at RogueDisposal.com.

Study, city staff say Ashland water rates have to go up

The cost of a new water treatment plant project combined with the length of time since its last water rate increase force the city’s hand, Public Works Director Scott Fleury told the Ashland City Council during its Tuesday business meeting: rates must be increased. A rate study says a customer with a ¾-inch meter using 700 cubic feet would see an increase of about $7 a month next year and $8 in the following year, moving up to around $11 per month five years out.
