Panel discussion at 11 a.m. planned on the future of community media

Ashland.news staff report

An “IndyCon independent media celebration” is set for 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 19, in the Rogue River Room in Stevenson Union at Southern Oregon University. It’s part of Ashland 20th annual Independent Media Week organized by Southern Oregon Jobs with Justice showcasing local independent media sources.

Local artists, media producers and creators will table and share in workshops and panels.

A “Be the Media” panel discussion on the future of community media is planned for 11 a.m. Ashland.news reporter Morgan Rothborne is set to take part; KSKQ and the Ashland Chronicle have also been invited.

The event is intended to showcase a coalition of independent media producers, local activists and community groups organized around the theme “A well-informed citizenry is a cornerstone of democracy” in the hopes of expanding and inspiring hyper-local media production, organizers say.

In April 2005, the city of Ashland officially proclaimed its first Independent Media Week.

Every year since, a coalition of local independent media organizations have asked the city to proclaim the third week in April, “Independent Media Week.”

The city’s proclamation says, in part: “An informed citizenry is a cornerstone of democracy … The trend toward the consolidation of media ownership has resulted in journalistic practices that hinder public awareness by excluding or marginalizing minority and dissenting viewpoints (and) Democratic principles support the case for more independent media in this country, not less.”
