Sparking Action! will be held Saturday at ScienceWorks
Fire season is coming up fast, and a free Ashland event is intended to help area residents start preparing — and have a little fun in the process.
The second annual Sparking Action! event will be a day of hands-on activities and fire science demonstrations, held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 10, at ScienceWorks Hands-on Museum, 1500 E. Main St. Admission is free, and a free lunch, which offers hot dogs and veggie dogs, will be provided.
RSVP here to help event officials get a better estimate on lunch attendance.
The event will be put on by the Southern Oregon Forest Restoration Collective, ScienceWorks, the city of Ashland and the Lomakatsi Restoration Project.
Attendees will be able to learn about putting together an evacuation plan, what to pack to be ready for an emergency, the cultural uses of fire and general fire science.
In addition to the variety of activity stations offered, two special programs will be held:
- A do-it-yourself air filter workshop will be held from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. An RSVP is required, as supplies are limited. Attendees will learn to make an air filter to protect their homes from harmful smoke. RSVP information is here.
- The film “Fire Lines,” a 2024 film by outdoor clothing and gear company Patagonia, will be screened from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. in the ScienceWorks auditorium. The film looks at trail networks and how cultural fire can support fire management, economic recovery and conservation in fire-prone landscapes.
