Letter: A most unsettling thought

November 20, 2023

If Donald Trump loses the 2024 election, we should be worried.

If history repeats itself, he’ll call the election unfair, fraudulent, an underhanded liberal conspiracy to deprive him of what he rightly deserves. He will blame defective voting machines and corrupt election officials and claim thousands voted more than once for his opponent. This will be Big Lie No. 2. Once his minions torch the Capitol, he will appoint himself president and thereby become our country’s first chief autocratic executive.

Altogether, an unsettling thought.

If Trump wins the election, we should be worried.

As commander in chief, he will destroy our Constitution and everything it stands for. He may amend the Bill of Rights without states’ approval, fill his Cabinet with men of dubious moral character and curtail freedom of the press if it attacks his views and falsehoods. If he is unable to browbeat the Department of Justice into indicting his political enemies, he will simply abolish it and appoint an attorney general who will ensure his right to remain our president for “perpetuity.”

Lastly, he will use the Army to suppress U.S. citizens who hold “dissident” views and invade Mexico to eradicate the cartels.

Once again, an unsettling thought. Best alternative: America comes to its senses.
