Letter: Don’t simmer in silence, speak out for change

April 21, 2023

Got the blues? The world going to the dogs? I found an antidote: Take action in
support of an issue you care about. For me, it is the gun safety bill HB 2005, currently
under discussion in Salem. I called our reps who oppose it: Rep. Cliff Bentz, and Rep.
Lori Chavez-DeRemer, both of whom give generously to the NRA. My message to
them was: If your wife/husband or child were killed by a gun would you hesitate to
support HB 2005?

Focusing beyond my narrow world woke me up to do something. We can make a
difference, and energize ourselves at the same time. Remember Edward Everett Hale’s
statement: “I am only one, but still am one. I cannot do everything, but still I can do
something, and because I cannot do everything I will not refuse to do the something
that I can do.”
