Gloria Louise Boyd, 94, a longtime member of the Ashland community, passed away after a long illness on Thursday, Aug. 24, 2023, at Asbury Methodist Village in Gaithersburg, Maryland.
She was born on Nov. 24, 1928, in Hartford, Connecticut, to John and Louise Paulsen. In 1949, she married Robert S. Boyd, a Pulitzer Prize winning journalist. Together they had four children, Peter A. Boyd (73), Susan A. Allan (71), Andrew J. Boyd (68), and Timothy J. Boyd (66).
She had eight grandchildren, Emily K., Emily N., Evan, Nora, Robert, Emelia, Isabella, and Mariel, and four great-grandchildren.
She became divorced from Robert in 1981.
Gloria (“Gramby”) was a writer, businesswoman, and loving mother of exceptional character. She was adventurous, crewing a clipper in the Caribbean, rafting the Grand Canyon, and bicycle touring vineyards in France.
She managed The Grand Hotel in Mackinac Island, Michigan, she purchased and ran the Cambria Coast Gallery in Cambria, California, and then she created a successful wearable art clothes boutique in Ashland.
She excelled in sculpture, piano, photography, writing short stories, and authored two published books, “Run Away Mama” and “Sincerely Louise.” A unique soul, Gloria will be dearly missed.
