April 10, 1938 — March 28, 2022
Stephen (Steve) Paul Cross was born in Santa Monica, California, to parents Louise and Jack Cross.
Steve’s love of the outdoors and wildlife led to his studies and career in biology. He completed his undergraduate degree at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and his master’s and doctorate at the University of Arizona.
He retired as a full professor, after teaching 30-plus years, from Southern Oregon University.
Steve also taught several summers at the field station in Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, as well as spending some time as a naturalist and advisor for Crater Lake National Park. He is well known for his bat research and received several awards and honors in the wildlife field.
He was active in local sports, enjoying tennis and city league basketball and softball. Hunting and fishing were lifelong outdoor pursuits.
He is survived by his children, Stephen, Michael, Rob and John; and grandchildren, George and Elena. They, along with extended family members, friends and former students alike, are forever grateful for his sharing experiences of the natural world and great outdoors together.
A celebration of his life will be held at a later date.
Arrangements are in care of Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home.
