We are sad to announce that Susy Munson, née McFarlin, lost her battle with metastatic breast cancer on July 11, 2023, surrounded by family.

Susy moved to Ashland in 1993, where she raised her family and built a strong community of friends. Her memorial service will be held at 5 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 6, in Sisters, Oregon. To RSVP, please email [email protected].

Bill Thorndike Jr. remembered as community titan, treasured friend

Family, community members and longtime friends of Medford native Bill Thorndike Jr. were collectively at a loss for words over the weekend at the sudden loss of a man they say had a hand in nearly anything good to happen in Southern Oregon for much of the past half-century. Thorndike, 71, suffered a heart attack early Saturday morning, just following a Valentine’s Day spent with his wife, Angela Thorndike, at a family cabin on Whidbey Island in Washington’s Puget Sound.

Ashland Parks & Recreation Commission approves budget request

Ashland Parks & Recreation Commissioners voted unanimously Wednesday to approve a requested budget for the department slightly higher than budget direction from the city. Senior Analyst Brandon Terry said the budget as directed would give the Parks & Recreation Department a total baseline budget of $22.3 million — $15 million for operations and $7.3 million for capital projects — for the next biennial budget, July 1, 2025, to June 30, 2027.

Foster homes found for guinea pigs abandoned in Lithia Park

Three guinea pigs had been left in Lithia Park, Ashland Community Service Officer Denise Aguilera was told when she was called to respond. The guinea pigs were left in a carrier “with a sign indicating ‘Free for the taking,’” Ashland Police Chief Tighe O’Meara said in an email Wednesday.
