Southern Oregon University’s 30th annual Powwow continues Sunday

Event will feature drummers, traditional songs, dancing; grand entry set for noon

Southern Oregon University’s Native American Student Union hosts SOU’s 30th annual powwow Saturday and Sunday, April 8 and 9, at the campus’s Lithia Motors Pavilion, 1465 Webster St., Ashland, according to a news release.

The event, which fill feature drumming, traditional songs and dancing, is free and open to the public. No drugs or alcohol will be allowed, according to an event flyer.

Festivities begin at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 8. It will begin with a grand entry, described by Native American Student Union (NASU) co-chair Kayla Dumore as an acknowledgement and greeting to the event space and community. There will be a second grand entry at 7 p.m. following a dinner break. A final grand entry will kick off at noon Sunday, April 9.

Drummers will perform traditional songs, and dancers from across the country will participate in some friendly competition dancing, Dunmore said. Vendors will also be present selling wares, with plenty of fry bread available for purchase, too.

SOU celebrates its 31st annual powwow

Community members from a variety of backgrounds will gather Saturday and Sunday for the 31st annual Southern Oregon University Powwow, widely regarded as the largest student-led event on campus. The event, hosted by the school’s Native American Student Union, is expected to draw thousands of visitors to Lithia Motors Pavilion in its second year back on campus after a COVID hiatus.
