SOU basketball: Little kids see a big game

Students from three elementary schools cheered on the Southern Oregon University women’s basketball team to a 65-49 win Friday, Feb. 23, against Walla Walla. The Raiders beat Corban 71-55 Tuesday, advancing SOU to host No. 4 seed Eastern Oregon at 5:30 p.m. Friday in the conference tournament semifinals.

Mt. Ashland Ski Area to open Thursday

It’s taken longer than usual but the wait is almost over.  The Mt. Ashland Ski Area will open for the season Thursday. Despite the later than usual opening, Thursday’s opening is fitting because Mt. Asland’s 60th anniversary season will begin exactly 60 years to the day after its first-ever opening in 1964.

Gearing up: Skiers, snowboarders descend upon Ashland Ski Swap

Piled high with ski boots, snowboards and other snow apparel, Southern Oregon’s Stevenson Union building was packed with people Saturday morning looking to purchase fresh equipment at the annual Ashland Ski Swap. While nearby Mt. Ashland Ski Area remains closed until the mountain receives a healthy dose of new powder, many ski swap attendees were eager to buy gear for the upcoming season.

Andrew Gast, general manager of the Mt. Ashland Ski Area, had hoped that this Saturday would be opening day for skiing this season, but he admitted defeat on Thursday, despite the latest snowstorm. Things are now day to day, while he, a couple hundred employees and untold numbers of skiers wait for more snow.
