A woman’s in the hospital and a man is in jail on charges of attempted murder following a shooting Monday evening in Ashland, according to an Ashland Police Department news release issued Tuesday afternoon.

Cory A. Davison, 49, of Ashland is being held without bail at Jackson County Jail on charges of attempted murder in the second degree, domestic violence assault in the second degree, and unlawful use of weapon in connection with an incidence of domestic violence.

The woman was transported to Rogue Regional Medical Center by Ashland Fire & Rescue, where she remained in stable condition Tuesday afternoon, according to the police report.

A red map pin marks Alida Street, one block west of the street that runs along the west side of the Ashland High School campus. A shooting on Alida Street Monday night, Dec. 9, took place in an apartment complex in the 40 block of the street, toward the north end of the street near its intersection with East Main Street, according to police reports. The shooting sequence of events, according to police, unfolded as follows:

Callers to 911 reported a man in an apartment complex in the 40 block of Alida Street had fired a gun and was making homicidal statements. The report reached Ashland police at 5:49 p.m.

At 5:54 p.m., officers arriving on scene and approaching the apartment complex were fired on by a man who then fled back inside the apartment.

Ashland officers requested additional assistance, including a SWAT team from the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office.

Moments later, officers heard two additional shots from within the apartment, which were almost immediately followed by another 911 call in which a woman advised dispatchers she was inside the apartment with the suspect and had been shot.

As officers headed toward the apartment to attempt to rescue the wounded woman, the suspect exited the apartment, making suicidal and homicidal statements and challenged officers to shoot him.

The man refused to obey officer commands, so officers used a Taser which struck the man, who was placed into custody.

Additional officers immediately entered the apartment with medical equipment and began life-saving treatment on the female victim, who had been shot twice.

Ashland police were assisted by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, Jackson County District Attorney’s Office, Ashland Fire & Rescue and the Oregon State Police Crime Lab.

Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to contact Det. Lindsey Rochon Evertt at 541-552-2120.
