A pedestrian died after stepping off the curb into the path of a west-bound vehicle on Ashland Street just west of YMCA Way shortly after 5:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 30, according to police reports.

Talent City Manager Jordan Rooklyn has proposed a new urban renewal plan that would provide one-third of the funding contained in the previous plan that was rejected by the City Council in August.
Ashland’s 24th Community Labyrinth Walk to New Year returns this Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 31 and Jan. 1, in Wesley Hall at Ashland First United Methodist Church, 175 N. Main St., Ashland. The free, public event runs from 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 31, through 1 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 1, then resumes from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 1.
The end of 2022 marks the departure of two Ashland City Council members who have left their marks on City Hall and their community. Councilors Stefani Seffinger and Stephen Jensen attended their final council meeting Dec. 20 and were recognized by current and former officials for their years of service.

For Oregon and the nation, 2022 was a historic year for legislation and funding to combat climate change. The Inflation Reduction Act passed by Congress in August directed $385 billion toward efforts to reduce the country’s greenhouse gas emissions, largely through tax incentives, rebates and grants for renewable energy projects from the corporate to household level.
Southern Oregon University will receive $2 million to support its transition to solar power and energy independence, a result of the federal appropriations bill hammered out through months of negotiations and approved by Congress last week.

Three major road projects are slated for 2023 in and around Ashland: Ashland Street from Siskiyou Boulevard to Faith Avenue, Mountain Avenue from East Main to Interstate 5, and replacement and repair of road and bridge surfaces from Exit 19 to Exit 11.

Obituary: Cheryl Rae Gilliam Minoletti passed away Tuesday, Jan. 20 following complications from heart surgery. She was 68. Infectious laughter, warmth, and compassion were felt by those who knew her. A celebration of her life will be held Saturday, March 28, in Eagle Point.
The Ashland Independent Film Festival will spotlight homegrown talent Saturday, Feb. 21, during its revived Local Lens Spotlight at the Varsity Theatre. The one-night program features 13 short films by filmmakers from Jackson and Siskiyou counties, followed by a Q&A with the filmmakers and crew.
