Ashland teacher receives Harvard program fellowship

Ashland High School teacher Paul Huard will participate in a Harvard University-sponsored program to develop curriculum that can be used in U.S. schools to teach students about the global significance of Ukraine. He joins a group of six American teachers selected through a competitive application process by the Davis Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies at Harvard.

School district employees lament loss of in-person librarian services this fall

Ashland Middle and Ashland High school students won’t have access to full-time, in-person librarians starting this fall, after cuts to the district’s General Fund budget made by the superintendent. Ashland High School’s librarian position is currently vacant following the departure of the school’s librarian and the position will remain so this fall. Ashland Middle School’s librarian position is proposed to be cut this fall as well.

Community forum set Tuesday on future of stray, unwanted animals in Jackson County

A community forum on the future of the Jackson County animal shelter — and stray or unwanted dogs and cats, in general — is set for Tuesday at the Medford library. The event at 5:30 p.m. is being hosted by an informal group of community members and shelter volunteers with concerns, they say, over the past year’s worth of happenings at the regional shelter located between Phoenix and Talent.

Register to vote in Oregon primaries by April 30

Oregonians have just more than a week left to register to vote or change their party affiliation before the May 21 primary. Only registered Republicans or Democrats will be able to vote in most primary elections, including picking nominees for Congress, secretary of state, treasurer, attorney general and legislative districts. Voters have until April 30 to register to vote, update their registration and pick a political party.
