Volunteers from the city’s Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) assembled for a quick refresher on the basics of disaster response Wednesday before dividing into teams and fanning out across the Railroad District for some door-knocking and community education. Ashland police were practicing a similar drill in other parts of the city.

First-graders in Ashland will be treated to a reading extravaganza on Wednesday at Ashland High School. The Rotary Club of Ashland and Rotary Club of Ashland Lithia Springs will host the ninth annual Ashland Reads “celebration of literacy” for about 170 first-grade students in the Ashland School District from about 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Ashland High School.
Some 30 Ashland Cub Scouts brought their bikes to The Siskiyou School on Monday evening to learn from experts about the importance of bike safety and bike maintenance. Organizations including the Rogue Valley Transportation District, Ashland Police Department, Ashland Cycle Sport and Ashland Devo shared safety tips, provided mechanical tuneups, and encouraged the scouts as they pedaled about.

Obituary: Cheryl Rae Gilliam Minoletti passed away Tuesday, Jan. 20 following complications from heart surgery. She was 68. Infectious laughter, warmth, and compassion were felt by those who knew her. A celebration of her life will be held Saturday, March 28, in Eagle Point.
The Ashland Independent Film Festival will spotlight homegrown talent Saturday, Feb. 21, during its revived Local Lens Spotlight at the Varsity Theatre. The one-night program features 13 short films by filmmakers from Jackson and Siskiyou counties, followed by a Q&A with the filmmakers and crew.
