OSF stage to host Rogue Valley Symphony holiday pop concerts

In a collaboration that speaks volumes about Ashland’s community spirit, Rogue Valley Symphony will present two new pops concerts under the direction of conductor Martin Majkut at Oregon Shakespeare Festival’s Angus Bowmer Theatre. Home for the Holidays, a pops concert, will be performed on the historic OSF stage this Dec. 15-16-17; and a Valentine’s Day pops concert will be presented on, yes, Feb. 14.

Ashland cellist finds support for more music in Lithia Park

Cellist Daniel Sperry’s campaign to bring another musician to Lithia Park has raised enough funds to add a violinist, Kathleen Strahm. Additional funds for other projects will be raised at a concert featuring a newly formed piano quintet performing original music composed by Sperry, as well as pieces by the rock band Coldplay and by Canadian singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen, who wrote “Hallelujah.”

Drummer Tom Stamper keeps the beat going, especially for his beloved jazz

For a guy who’s retired, Tom Stamper stays busy. The Ashland drummer performs in and around town with a variety of jazz and blues bands, he teaches drumming and he creates pottery and other visual art. He’ll be performing soon with two different bands at the Bloomsbury Blends coffee shop and wine bar, where he has been a regular weekend player this year with a changing lineup of local jazz and blues musicians.

Asbestos found at Lincoln School to delay renovations

An estimate for the cost to abate asbestos found in the shuttered Lincoln School recently should be available as early as sometime this week, according to Steve Mitzel, operations director for Ashland School District. The cost to remove asbestos would be separate from the as yet-unknown cost for structural repair.
