Cooling shelter in Ashland open starting Thursday

Ashland.news staff report

Very hot conditions forecast for southwest Oregon prompted the Medford office of the National Weather Service to issue an extreme heat warning Wednesday afternoon for the period from 1 p.m. Friday to 8 p.m. Monday.

High temperatures of 100 to 107 degrees are expected in the valleys of Josephine and Jackson counties, with overnight lows of 60 to 70 degrees.

In Ashland, highs are forecast to climb from 96 Thursday to 101 Friday, 102 Saturday and 100 Sunday before dipping back into double digits at 97 Monday and 95 Tuesday, with overnight lows in the mid-60s.

Unusually hot temperatures increase risk for heat-related illnesses, the weather service warned.

Temperatures of 95-plus trigger the city of Ashland’s extreme weather shelter program.

Shelters will be open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 21, at the OHRA (Opportunities for Housing Resources and Assistance) Center at 2350 Ashland St.; and from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday through Sunday, Aug. 22-24, at the Ashland Public Library, 410 Siskiyou Boulevard. The library is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and noon to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
