What to do before, during and after an evacuation are among the topics Ashland emergency officials will discuss during an evacuation preparedness meeting on Wednesday.

A 19-year-old man fell from a cliff and drowned in a swimming hole at a rock quarry reservoir 14 miles east of Ashland off Dead Indian Memorial Road Thursday evening, according to a news release from the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office.

“If that deer needs to be lethally removed, it falls to us,” Ashland Police Chief Tighe O’Meara said. “It’s not unusual to have to put down injured deer — we do that fairly frequently — but I’m not sure if this has happened before.”

Ashland resident Lola Jackson is scheduled to attend a hearing and pre-trial conference Monday, June 30, following a June 12 arrest where police allege she struck a pedestrian in a motorized wheelchair with her vehicle, according to an Ashland Police Department press release.
