Obituary: Matthew Mark ‘Oostburg’ Vander Sande

Matthew Mark "Oostburg" Vander Sande
September 12, 2025

Sept. 16, 1984 — Sept. 7, 2025

In loving memory of Matthew Mark “Oostburg” Vander Sande

Matthew Mark “Oostburg” Vander Sande, age 40, of Ashland, Oregon, passed away tragically on Sept. 7, 2025. Born on Sept. 16, 1984, in Wisconsin, Matthew was a friend who loved deeply, cherished every connection, and left a lasting impact on all who knew him.

Matthew’s greatest joy was his mama, family and his friends. He filled their lives with laughter, warmth, and unwavering loyalty. He had a rare gift for making people feel truly seen and loved, and his devotion to those around him was unmatched.

He loved camping under the stars, digging for crystals, and sharing those treasures with friends — little pieces of his generous spirit. He also cherished his work at the Grange Co-op , where his humor, kindness, and genuine care made him beloved by co-workers and customers alike.

One of Matthew’s deepest bonds was with his constant companion, Sokker. Their love was evident to all who met them, and Sokker will be moving to Wisconsin to continue a life surrounded by the care and love Matthew would have wanted for her.

Matthew will be deeply missed by his mama, family, and countless friends who were blessed to know him. Though his life ended far too soon, his spirit, his love for his family and friends, and the joy he shared will live on forever.

Arrangements are in care of Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home litwillersimonsen.com.

Councilor Bob Kaplan: While the cost of delivering kilowatt-hours to our homes has risen, Ashland Electric has been able to hold our rates steady with just one increase of 5.1% in 2021. I’m sorry to say we’re due for an increase, but fortunately it’s not likely to match recent increases elsewhere.

An estimate for the cost to abate asbestos found in the shuttered Lincoln School recently should be available as early as sometime this week, according to Steve Mitzel, operations director for Ashland School District. The cost to remove asbestos would be separate from the as yet-unknown cost for structural repair.
