Update on Woody the former puppy intern and a new canine puzzle!

By Strider the Dog

Dear Strider

Thank you for your service! You are doing a good job.

I have a question. A few months ago you introduced us to the Puppy Woody, and he wrote a piece of his own. Since then, we have heard no more of him. What has become of Woody? Did your owners give him back? I thought you might be training him to take over your column.

Good boy!

— Simply Curious

Dear Simply,

Thank you for asking after our Woody the Dog, formerly Woody the Puppy Intern. Actually, I announced way back when that Woody was moving on to other creative endeavors. He just wasn’t temperamentally suited for an advice column, being too optimistic and only ever seeing the good in people. I mean you have to know the dark side to be able to deal with humans, am I right? I was a street dog. I was made for this gig. Woody, while a rescue, was adopted as a puppy from Sanctuary One. The people who care for the animals there are so kind and loving, he permanently thinks the rest of the world must be, too.

Strider the Dog

That said, Woody, like me, is a born newshound. He continues to follow in my pawsteps, working in journalism, although big city news isn’t really his thing. He’s more a small town news sort of a dog. And he’s landed on all four paws, writing a monthly article for the coastal village of Yachats, “Woody’s World:  A Pup’s Perspective.” Check it out. As he loves everybody and everything about the place, he’s perfect for the job.

And no, of course our guardians didn’t “give him back.” As if.

Dear Strider,

I hope you enjoyed September’s crossword featuring canine music titles and groups.

In November’s Canine Capers #03, several of the long theme entries are dog-related journalistic idioms (17- and 23-Across), — especially appropriate for Ashland.news end-of-year fund raising efforts. Others are related to paper & publishing.

Do you remember when dogs once faithfully fetched the newspaper from the curb or porch for their human readers? As the shift of information from paper to digital has been occurring, dogs’ interaction with media will likely change, for example:

If schoolchildren misplace their iPads for assignments, will they still blame you (53-Across)?

Will corner bookmarks on a Kindle still be named for canines (37-Across)?

The “Ask Strider” column is a great example of online publishing by another species, as predicted by a classic 1993 New Yorker cartoon (63-Across).

If you enjoy celebrating anniversaries, last week’s Canine Capers #03 was the 100th word puzzle to appear in Ashland.news!

Dear Steve,

I bow wow to you, sir! Another canine crossword is just what this dog needs. Thank you! And thanks for mentioning that we’re at the end of the year super special donation period, that one I bark about as loud as I can to keep the news coming everyone’s way. Not to mention my own column (he said modestly).

Everyone, please support Ashland.news! And in the meantime, enjoy this crossword treat by Steve, the Ashland.news crossword editor. I know I did.

P.S.: Thanks for making the fireworks virtual, Steve. Very thoughtful of you.
