SOU celebrates its 31st annual powwow

Community members from a variety of backgrounds will gather Saturday and Sunday for the 31st annual Southern Oregon University Powwow, widely regarded as the largest student-led event on campus. The event, hosted by the school’s Native American Student Union, is expected to draw thousands of visitors to Lithia Motors Pavilion in its second year back on campus after a COVID hiatus.

Ashland Dairy Queen Owner Jason Federico opened the back door to the fast food franchise restaurant on Tuesday afternoon, but instead of a bustling and cheery ice cream eatery, he  stepped into an echoey, bare-bones remnant that still smelled of smoke, a far cry from what it was when he opened it in April 2022.

Hunger on the rise in Oregon after downward trend before the pandemic

A quarter of a century ago, Oregon had one of the highest rates of food insecurity and hunger in the country. By 2019, rates in the state dipped below the U.S. average. Then the pandemic hit, and rates rose again. With hunger growing, food advocates and a group of lawmakers on the Oregon Hunger Task Force called last week for the Legislature to enact in the upcoming session a number of measures to address hunger and the plight of low-income residents.

Dine-out demonstration planned Monday on Ashland Plaza

Frustrated at having to host free community meals outdoors instead of inside Pioneer Hall as in past years, organizers of the free meals are inviting others unhappy that those who need the free food have no alternative but to eat outdoors in the cold to join in a demonstration of solidarity by dining together outside Monday afternoon, Dec. 11.
