Oregon has process to prevent gun violence but it’s not widely used, report finds

Oregon officials can do more to increase public awareness about an obscure civil court tool that can prevent gun violence and suicides, according to an Oregon Secretary of State report released Wednesday. The tool is based upon Oregon’s “red flag” law, which allows family members or law enforcement to petition the court for someone to turn in their firearms if they are a risk to themselves or others.

Early morning grass fire burned 8 acres east of Ashland

Firefighters were hard at work before dawn Wednesday knocking down a grass fire on Dead Indian Memorial Road. The fire call came in at 3:06 a.m., and the first engines on scene immediately set to work defending nearby structures, said Fire District 5 Battalion Chief Jim Campbell.

City settles Parks employee’s lawsuit for $700K

A former Ashland Parks & Recreation employee will receive $700,000 to settle a lawsuit dating back to February 2022, the city of Ashland said in a statement released Monday. A post on the city’s website said the lawsuit filed by Laura Chancellor against Ashland Parks & Recreation, the city and five employees and was dismissed with the agreement of all parties “to avoid the expense and burden of further litigation.”
